Marguerite Duras (1914–1996) was a French novelist, filmmaker, screenwriter and essayist. Her many novels include The Lover, Moderato cantabile, The Ravishing of Lol Stein, The Sea Wall and Emily L. She was the screenwriter for Alain Resnais’ 1959 film Hiroshima mon amour and has directed numerous films including India Song, Le Camion and Nathalie Granger.  Jean-Luc Godard (1930–) is a French-Swiss filmmaker. He was a film critic for Cahiers du Cinéma and his films include Breathless, Vivre sa vie, Contempt, Alphaville, Every Man for Himself (in which Duras famously does not appear), Histoire(s) du cinéma and Goodbye to Language.
