CONTEMPORARY ART | ART THEORY

Virtual reality (VR) offers artists new ways of creating narratives and sensory environments for audiences. It allows images to become sculptural, amplifies attention, and transports users to a different kind of embodiment and interaction. Artists in Virtual Reality surveys contemporary art’s resurgent interest in VR over the last five years through interviews with leading international artists. Put together during a period defined by physical separation and an increased reliance on virtual forms of connection, this publication explores how experimental artists are producing unexpected and engaging responses to our state of technological immersion and altered social landscape. Reflecting on the implications of VR for artists, audiences and institutions, the publication features in-depth interviews with leading artists, covering a range of approaches and viewpoints. Featured artists include Rebecca Allen, Peter Burr, Jeremy Couillard, Philip Hausmeier, Rachel Maclean, Paul McCarthy, Florian Meisenberg, Mélodie Mousset, Jon Rafman, Rachel Rossin, Jakob Kudsk Steensen, Theo Triantafyllidis and Jordan Wolfson. In addition to artist’s viewpoints there are contributions from producers Khora Contemporary and digital studio Werkflow. The publication includes an extended essay by Maitreyi Maheshwari (Head of Programme, FACT, Liverpool), a foreword by Michael Connor (Artistic Director, Rhizome, NYC) and an introduction by Zabludowicz Collection Director, Elizabeth Neilson. As an additional element it also includes two new augmented reality (AR) experiences that can be scanned for mobile devices, by artists Florian Meisenberg and Jeremy Couillard, courtesy of Daata. Artists in Virtual Reality, continues Zabludowicz Collection’s commitment to supporting artists working with emerging technologies. Since 2015, when a VR piece by Canadian artist Jon Rafman was presented in London, Zabludowicz Collection have pioneered presenting VR to gallery audiences. In 2018 the Collection established the 360: Virtual Reality Room, a dedicated environment for visitors to experience how artists are testing the possibilities of this technology.
